عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ افْتَتَحَ صَلاَتَهُ بِرَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) rose at night [to pray], he would open his prayer with two light rak'ahs. Reported by Muslim.

استحباب افتتاح صلاة قيام الليل بركعتين خفيفتين أسوة برسول اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عليه، وذلك لإذهاب أثر النوم والفتور بعده وجلبًا للنشاط إلى العبادة على وجه الكمال.
The recommendation of opening the night prayer with two light rak'ahs, in emulation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so as to dispel the effect of sleep and the sluggishness that follows it, and to bring energy to worship in its most complete form.
