عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا فَاتَتْهُ الصَّلاَةُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مِنْ وَجَعٍ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ صَلَّى مِنَ النَّهَارِ ثِنْتَيْ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) missed the night prayer due to pain or something else, he would pray twelve rak'ahs during the day. Reported by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
الصَّلاة من اللَّيل: أي ورده صلّى الله عليه وسلم من قيام اللّيل، وكان إحدى عشرة ركعة. من وجع: أي بسبب مرض أو نحوه. أو غيره: كاشتغاله بأهم منها.
"The night prayer": that is, his (peace and blessings be upon him) regular portion of night prayer, which was eleven rak'ahs. "Due to pain": that is, on account of illness or the like. "Or something else": such as his being occupied with something more important than it.
