عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «إِذَا نَعَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الصَّلاةِ فَلْيَرْقُدْ حَتَّى يَذْهَبَ عَنْهُ النَّوْمُ، فَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ إِذَا صَلَّى وَهُوَ نَاعِسٌ، لَعَلَّهُ يَذْهَبُ يَسْتَغْفِرُ فَيَسُبّ نَفْسَهُ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you becomes drowsy during the prayer, let him lie down until the sleepiness leaves him; for if one of you prays while drowsy, he may [intend to] seek forgiveness yet [end up] reviling himself." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

نعس: من النعاس وهو الوسن من غير نوم، وعلامته أن يسمع كلام الحاضرين وإن لم يفهم معناه. يذهب يستغفر: أي يريد أن يستغفر. فيسبّ نفسه: أي بسبب غلبة النعاس.
"Becomes drowsy": from nu'as, which is drowsiness without [actual] sleep; its sign is that one hears the speech of those present even if he does not grasp its meaning. "He may [intend to] seek forgiveness": that is, he wishes to seek forgiveness. "Yet reviles himself": that is, on account of being overcome by drowsiness.

كراهة إجهاد النفس بالعبادة بشرط عدم فوات الفريضة. الاقتصاد وترك الغلوّ في العبادة وحُمِل على نفل الليل لأنّه محلّ النوم. المُغالَاة في الأمور حتى في الطاعات قد تؤدِّي إلى عكس المُراد منها فيَقع في الإثْم بدلَ حُصولِ الأجر. الحثُّ على اليقَظَةِ والتَّنبُّهِ في الصَّلاةِ وعلى الخشوع وحضور القلب في العبادة.
The dislikedness of exhausting oneself with worship, provided that no obligatory prayer is thereby missed. Moderation and the avoidance of excess in worship; this is understood as applying to the voluntary night prayer, since it is the time of sleep. Going to extremes in matters, even in acts of obedience, may lead to the opposite of what is intended, so that one falls into sin instead of attaining reward. Encouragement to be alert and attentive in prayer, and to have humility (khushu') and presence of heart in worship.
