Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you rises at night [to pray] and the Qur'an becomes tangled upon his tongue so that he does not know what he is saying, let him lie down." Reported by Muslim.
"Becomes tangled": that is, he reaches a state where he does not know what he is saying and the words become confused for him. "Let him lie down": let him sleep.

Encouragement to pray at night in a state of energy and with the ability to comprehend, to have humility, and to bring the heart into the presence of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic). The merit of tahajjud at night is not attained amid drowsiness and laziness. Praying in this state is disliked (makruh). It is recommended for whoever is overtaken by drowsiness while praying at night to sleep a little until he regains his energy. Analogous to drowsiness, in this dislikedness, is any distraction that diverts one from humility and presence of heart, so it is recommended that he free himself of it before prayer; and other prayers are likewise analogous to the night prayer in this regard.
