عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «مَنْ قَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever stands [in prayer] during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

قام رمضان: أحيا لياليه بالعبادة. احتسابًا: إخلاصًا للّه تعالى.
"Stands [in prayer] during Ramadan": he spends its nights alive with worship. "Seeking reward": with sincerity to Allah the Exalted.

Encouragement to stand in night prayer during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward. The merit of the night prayer in Ramadan, and that it is among the causes of the forgiveness of sins. The night prayer of Ramadan is fulfilled by the Tarawih prayer, which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed as eight rak'ahs apart from the rak'ahs of Witr; and it is permissible to increase upon that, as the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did. It contains [evidence for] the permissibility of saying "Ramadan" without prefacing it with the word "month [of]."
