Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that I would impose hardship upon my nation, or upon the people, I would have commanded them to use the siwak (tooth-stick) with every prayer." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

"Were it not that I would impose hardship": were it not for my fear of causing difficulty. "I would have commanded them": a command of obligation. "The siwak": the word denotes the act itself, and also the implement used for it, which is likewise called a miswak. "With every prayer": that is, when intending to pray.

Encouragement to use the siwak at every prayer, whether obligatory or voluntary; the essence of the sunnah is fulfilled by using anything that cleans the teeth. A demonstration of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) gentleness and compassion toward his nation, and his guiding them to what benefits them. It has been said that among the wisdoms behind the legislation of the siwak is the removal of unpleasant odor from the mouth, especially when turning to Allah (the Mighty and Majestic). Observing social etiquette and not harming people with a foul odor.
