عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «الْفِطْرَةُ خَمْسٌ -أَوْ خَمْسٌ مِنَ الْفِطْرَةِ-: الْخِتَانُ، وَالِاسْتِحْدَادُ، وَتَقْلِيمُ الْأَظْفَارِ، وَنَتْفُ الْإبْطِ، وَقَصُّ الشَّارِبِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The fitrah (natural disposition) is five, or five are from the fitrah: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the nails, plucking the armpit hair, and trimming the mustache." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

الفطرة: الجبلّة التي خلق اللّه الناس عليها وجبلهم على فعلها وجعل العقول الصحيحة تستحسنها. خمس: أي من خصال الفطرة خمس، وليس المراد بها الفطرة. الختان: مصدر ختن بمعنى قطع، والمراد قطع الجلدة التي تكون على مقدمة ذكر الصبي عند الولادة. الاستحداد: حلق الشعر الذي يكون حول الفرج أو فوقه وهو ما يسمى بالعانة مأخوذ من استحد إذا استعمل الحديد.
"The fitrah": the innate disposition upon which Allah created people and inclined them to act, and which sound minds find good. "Five": that is, five of the practices of the fitrah; it does not mean these constitute the entirety of the fitrah. "Circumcision" (khitan): a verbal noun meaning to cut; what is meant is removing the foreskin at the tip of a boy's penis present at birth. "Shaving the pubic hair" (istihdad): shaving the hair around or above the private parts, known as the pubic region; derived from istahadda, meaning to use a blade (iron).

أنّ هذه الخصال من السنّة القديمة التي اختارها الأنبياء واتفقت عليها الشرائع القديمة، وهي أمور تقتضيها النظافة والطبيعة الإنسانية. أنّ خصال الفطرة تدل على اعتناء الإسلام بالطهارة قلبًا وقالبًا. الختان سنة قديمة، ففي البخاري قال رسول اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عليه وَسَلَّم: "اختتن إبراهيم خليل الرحمـٰن بعدما أتت عليه ثمانون سنة".
These practices belong to the ancient sunnah chosen by the prophets and agreed upon by the earlier revealed laws; they are matters required by cleanliness and human nature. The practices of the fitrah show Islam's concern with purity, both inward and outward. Circumcision is an ancient sunnah; in al-Bukhari, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abraham, the Friend of the Most Merciful, circumcised himself after eighty years had passed over him."
