عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «عَشْرٌ مِنَ الْفِطْرَةِ: قَصُّ الشَّارِبِ، وَإعْفَاءُ اللِّحْيَةِ، وَالسِّوَاكُ، وَاسْتِنْشَاقُ الْمَاءِ، وَقَصُّ الْأَظْفَارِ، وَغَسْلُ الْبَرَاجِمِ، وَنَتْفُ الْإِبْطِ، وَحَلْقُ الْعَانَةِ، وَانْتِقَاصُ الْمَاءِ» قَالَ الرَّاوِي: وَنَسِيتُ العَاشِرَةَ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ المَضْمَضَةَ. قَالَ وَكِيعٌ -وَهُوَ أحَدُ رُوَاتِهِ–: «انْتِقَاصُ المَاءِ» يَعْنِي: الِاسْتِنْجَاءَ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ten are from the fitrah: trimming the mustache, letting the beard grow, using the siwak, drawing water into the nose, clipping the nails, washing the finger joints, plucking the armpit hair, shaving the pubic hair, and cleansing with water (istinja)." The narrator said: I forgot the tenth, unless it was rinsing the mouth. Wakiʿ, one of its narrators, said: "cleansing with water" means istinja (cleaning oneself after relieving oneself). إعفاء اللحية: إطلاقها وتوفير شعرها من عفا الشيء إذا كثر وزاد. استنشاق الماء: إيصاله إلى أعلى الأنف. الْبَرَاجِم: هِيَ عُقَدُ الْأَصَابِعِ. الاستنجاء: إزالة أثر النجاسة عن مخرجها بالغسل أو المسح مأخوذ من النجاء وهو الخلاص، نجا من الأمر خلص منه.
"Letting the beard grow": leaving it be and allowing its hair to become abundant; from ʿafa al-shayʾ, meaning when something increases and abounds. "Drawing water into the nose": bringing it up to the upper part of the nose. "The finger joints" (al-barajim): the knuckles and creases of the fingers. "Istinja": removing the traces of impurity from its point of exit by washing or wiping; derived from al-najaʾ, meaning deliverance, as naja min al-amr means he was freed from the matter.

هذه الأحاديث تتعلق بخصال الفطرة، أي خصال السنّة التي فطر اللّه عليها العباد وشرعها لهم، وجعل استحسانها مفطورا في العقول. قص وتقصير الأظافر من السّنن التي دعا لها الإسلام، حيث حثَّ في العديد من النصوص على العناية والاهتمام بالأظافر وعدم إهمالها، وذلك لما تحمله من الفضلات والقاذورات في الحياة اليوميّة إذا ما كانت طويلة. غسل عقد الأصابع: وهي التعرّجات والعقد التي بين الأصابع التي قد تتجمّع الأوساخ فيها، فيميل الإنسان لغسل هذه البراجم. الاستنجاء: وهو إزالة الخارج من السبيلين بماء أو حجر، فهو لازم وشرط من شروط الطهارة. إزالة شعر العانة والإبط: وتحصل السنّة بحلق العانة ونتف الإبط وإن شقّ عليه نتفه فإنه يحلقه، والأفضل أن لا يؤخر ذلك عن وقت الحاجة ويكره تأخيره عن أربعين يومًا.
These hadiths concern the practices of the fitrah, that is, the sunnah practices upon which Allah created His servants and which He legislated for them, making their goodness innate to the intellect. Clipping and shortening the nails is among the sunnahs Islam calls to; many texts urge caring for the nails and not neglecting them, since when long they collect waste and filth in daily life. Washing the finger joints: these are the creases and knuckles between the fingers where dirt may gather, so one is inclined to wash these joints. Istinja: removing what is discharged from the two private passages with water or a stone; it is required and is a condition among the conditions of purity. Removing the pubic and armpit hair: the sunnah is fulfilled by shaving the pubic hair and plucking the armpit hair; if plucking is too difficult, one may shave it. It is best not to delay this beyond the time of need, and delaying it beyond forty days is disliked.
