عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا، عَنِ النَّبيِّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «أَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ، وَأَعْفُوا اللِّحَى» مُتَّفَقُ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Trim the mustaches closely and let the beards grow." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

أحفوا الشوارب: بالغوا في قصها من الحفاوة وهو المبالغة في الإكرام.
"Trim the mustaches closely" (ahfu): be thorough in cutting them; from al-hafawah, meaning to be lavish and thorough.

أنّ السنّة في حفّ الشارب إمّا حفًّا بأن يقص أطرافه مما يلي الشفة حتى تبدو، وإما أن يأخذ منه جميعًا بأن يُحْفِيَهُ، وقال العلماء: "من جزّ الشارب حتى تظهر الشفة العليا أو أحفاه فلا حرج عليه، لأن الأحاديث جاءت بالأمرين". أنّ اللحية نعمة جليلة عظيمة تفضل اللّهُ بها على الرجال وميزهم بها عن النساء، وجعلها زينة لهم لما تفضي عليهم من سيما الرجولة والهيبة والوقار. حث الإسلام على النظافة والبعد عن كل ما يسبب النفرة والتقزز.
The sunnah regarding the mustache is either to trim it by cutting its edges next to the lip until the lip shows, or to take it all off by trimming it closely. The scholars said: "Whoever clips the mustache until the upper lip appears, or trims it closely, has done nothing wrong, for the hadiths came with both." The beard is a great and noble blessing with which Allah has favored men, distinguishing them from women, and which He made an adornment for them, bestowing upon them the mark of manhood, dignity, and gravity. Islam's encouragement of cleanliness and avoiding everything that causes aversion and disgust.
