عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «إِذَا جَاءَ رَمَضَانُ فُتِّحَتْ أَبْوَابُ الْجَنَّةِ، وَغُلِّقَتْ أَبْوَابُ النَّارِ، وَصُفِّدَتِ الشَّيَاطِينُ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of the Fire are closed, and the devils are chained." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

صفدت: قيدت بالأصفاد، وهي القيود.
"are chained (suffidat)": bound with fetters (asfad), which are shackles.

إكرام شهر رمضان، وبشارة الصائمين فيه بأنّ هذا الشهر المبارك موسم عبادة وخير. ضعف مداخل الشيطان إلى المسلم في شهر رمضان فيتقوّى على الطاعة والعبادة. لما كانت الغاية من الصيام تحقيق التقوى فمن رحمة اللّه أنّه هيأ للعبد أسبابها من فتح أبواب الجنّة، وإغلاق أبواب النار، وتصفيد الشياطين، فلا يبقى للعبد عذر إلّا غلبة هواه ونفسه الأمارة بالسوء فلا يلومَنَّ إلّا نفسه.
The honoring of the month of Ramadan, and the glad tidings for those fasting in it that this blessed month is a season of worship and goodness. The weakening of Satan's avenues of approach to the Muslim during Ramadan, so that he is strengthened in obedience and worship. Since the aim of fasting is to attain God-consciousness (taqwa), it is from Allah's mercy that He has prepared for the servant its means—opening the gates of Paradise, closing the gates of the Fire, and chaining the devils—so that no excuse remains for the servant except the prevailing of his own whims and his soul that incites to evil; so let him blame none but himself.
