عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ، وَأفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ، فَإنْ غَبيَ فَأَكْمِلُوا عِدَّةَ شَعْبَانَ ثَلاَثِينَ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ، وَهَذَا لَفْظُ الْبُخَارِيِّ. وَفِي رِوَايَةِ مُسْلِمٍ: «فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَصُومُوا ثَلاَثِينَ يَوْمًا.»
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fast upon sighting it, and break your fast upon sighting it. If it is obscured from you, then complete the count of Sha'ban as thirty." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim), and this is the wording of al-Bukhari. In the narration of Muslim: "If it is overcast for you, then fast thirty days."

صوموا لرؤيته: أي لرؤية هلال رمضان. وأفطروا لرؤيته: أي لرؤية هلال شوال. فإن غبِيَ: أي خفيَ. فإن غم: أي حال دون رؤية الهلال غيم أو نحوه من غممت الشيء إذا غطيته.
"Fast upon sighting it": that is, upon sighting the crescent of Ramadan. "and break your fast upon sighting it": that is, upon sighting the crescent of Shawwal. "if it is obscured (ghubiya)": that is, hidden. "if it is overcast (ghumma)": that is, clouds or the like prevent the sighting of the crescent—from "ghamamtu al-shay'" (I covered the thing), when you cover it.

أنًه يجب على المسلمين أن يلتمسوا الهلال عند غروب اليوم التاسع والعشرين من رمضان حتى يتبينوا أمر صومهم وإفطارهم. يجب صيامُ رمضان حتى يثبُتَ دخول الشهر، ويُحكَم بدخولِ شهر رمضان بواحدٍ من أمرين: رؤية هلال شهر رمضان عقب غروب الشمس من يوم التاسع والعشرين من شهر شعبان. إكمال شهرِ شعبانَ ثلاثين يومًا إذا لم يُرَ هلال رمضان، أو حال دون رؤيتِه غيمٌ أو غبار أو غيرهما.
Muslims are obliged to seek out the crescent at sunset on the twenty-ninth day of Ramadan so that the matter of their fasting and breaking the fast may become clear to them. The fasting of Ramadan becomes obligatory once the entry of the month is established, and the entry of the month of Ramadan is confirmed by one of two things: Sighting the crescent of Ramadan just after sunset on the twenty-ninth day of Sha'ban. Completing the month of Sha'ban as thirty days if the crescent of Ramadan is not sighted, or if clouds, dust, or the like prevent its sighting.
