عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا دَخَلَ الْعَشْرُ أَحْيَا اللَّيْلَ، وَأَيْقَظَ أَهْلَهُ، وَشَدَّ المِئْزَرَ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When the [last] ten days entered, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would spend the night in worship, wake his family, and tighten his waist-wrapper. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
دخل العشر: أي العشر الأواخر. أحيا الليل: بالقيام فيه. وشد المئزر: كناية عن المبالغة في الجد وعمل الخير، وقيل كناية عن اعتزال النساء للاشتغال بالعبادات.
"the ten days entered": that is, the last ten days. "spend the night in worship (ahya al-layl)": by standing in prayer during it. "and tighten his waist-wrapper (mi'zar)": a metaphor for exerting utmost effort and doing good; it has also been said to be a metaphor for withdrawing from women in order to devote himself to acts of worship.
