عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لا يَتَقَدَّمَنَّ أَحَدُكمْ رَمَضَانَ بِصَومِ يَوْمٍ أَوْ يَوْمَيْنِ، إلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ رَجُلٌ كَانَ يَوْمَ صَوْمِهِ فَلْيَصُمْ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let none of you precede Ramadan by fasting a day or two, unless it be a man who [regularly] observed his fast on that day—then let him fast that day." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

لا يتقدمن أحدكم: نهي تحريم استقبال شهر رمضان بصوم يوم أو يومين قبله لمن لم تكن له عادة، وذكر اليومين لإفادة تأكيد تحريم اليوم. يصوم صومه: أي اليوم الذي اعتاد صومه كالاثنين والخميس أو صوم يوم وإفطار يوم.
"Let none of you precede": a prohibition of forbiddance against meeting the month of Ramadan with a fast of a day or two before it, for one who has no habit of doing so; the mention of "two days" serves to emphasize the prohibition of the single day. "he fasts his customary fast": that is, the day he is accustomed to fasting, such as Monday and Thursday, or fasting one day and not the next.

النهي عن الصوم قبل رمضان بيوم أو أكثر إلّا لمن اعتاد صومًا فوافق مجيئه بهـٰذا اليوم، أو لقضاء فريضة. المنع من الزيادة على ما شرع اللّه وسنَّ رسوله في العبادات. العبادات في الإسلام توقيفية فلا يصح فيها زيادة ولا نقصان بغير دليل شرعي.
The prohibition of fasting a day or more before Ramadan, except for one who has a customary fast that happens to coincide with this day, or one making up an obligatory fast. The prohibition of adding to what Allah has legislated and His Messenger has established in acts of worship. Acts of worship in Islam are fixed by revelation (tawqifiyya); no addition or reduction in them is valid without legislative evidence.
