عَنْ سَلْمَانَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الضَّبِّيِّ الصَّحَابِيِّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ، عَنِ النَّبيِّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «إِذَا أَفْطَرَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيُفْطِرْ عَلَى تَمْرٍ، فَإنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ.. فَلْيُفْطِرْ عَلَى مَاءٍ، فَإِنَّهُ طَهُورٌ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ، وَالتِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Salman ibn Amir al-Dabbi, the Companion (may Allah be pleased with him), reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates; and if he does not find any, then let him break it with water, for it is purifying." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.
الشرح · explanation
فإنه طهور: أي طاهر مُطَهِّر مزيل للخبائث المعنوية والحسية.
"For it is purifying": that is, pure and purifying, removing both intangible and tangible impurities.
