عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَامَ عَاشُورَاءَ، وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted Ashura and commanded that it be fasted. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

عاشوراء: هو اليوم العاشر من شهر المحرم.
"Ashura": it is the tenth day of the month of Muharram.

The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) keenness to fast the day of Ashura and his encouragement to fast it; and the Prophetic command to fast it is evidence that it is to be understood as strongly recommended.
