عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «بُنِيَ الْإِسْلامُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ: شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لَا إلَـٰهَ إلَّا اللّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رسُولُ اللّهِ، وَإِقَامِ الصَّلاةِ، وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ، وَحَجِّ البيْتِ، وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Islam is built upon five: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving the zakat, pilgrimage to the House, and fasting Ramadan." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

An explanation of the foundations upon which Islam is built. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam; it is known from the religion by necessity, and whoever denies it becomes a disbeliever. The pillar status of Hajj is conditioned by capability (istita'ah), as stated in other wordings of the hadith.
