Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us and said: "O people, Hajj has been made obligatory upon you, so perform Hajj." A man said: Every year, O Messenger of Allah? He remained silent, until the man had said it three times. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had I said yes, it would have become obligatory, and you would not have been able to do it." Then he said: "Leave me with what I have left to you; those before you were destroyed only because of their excessive questioning and their disagreement with their prophets. So when I command you with something, do of it what you are able, and when I forbid you from something, then abstain from it." Reported by Muslim.

"It would have become obligatory": that is, Hajj would have become obligatory every year, because it would have been uttered by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). "Leave me with what I have left to you": spare me excessive questioning about matters I have not hastened to explain to you. "Because of their excessive questioning": that is, questioning without any need to ask and without the intention of learning, but merely out of obstinacy and with the aim of causing harm, or out of idle curiosity and haste.

The obligation of Hajj once in a lifetime upon the one who is able. This religion is founded upon ease and the lifting of hardship, and therefore a person is not burdened in it with what overwhelms him and is difficult for him. A person's refraining from asking about what does not concern him and about what would distress him if it were disclosed. Commands are conditioned by capability, whereas prohibitions must be abstained from absolutely.
