عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لَغَدْوَةٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ أَوْ رَوْحَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا فِيهَا» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A single morning or evening spent going out in the path of Allah is better than the world and all that is in it." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
الغدوة: أي السير أو الخروج أول النهار ما بين الفجر وطلوع الشمس، وقيل من أول النهار إلى انتصافه. الروحة: أي السير أو الخروج وقت زوال الشمس وسط النهار إلى غروبها آخر النهار. سبيل الله: أي الجهاد.
al-ghadwah (the morning going out): traveling or setting out at the beginning of the day, between dawn and sunrise; and it is said, from the start of the day until its midpoint. al-rawhah (the evening going out): traveling or setting out from when the sun passes its zenith at midday until its setting at the day's end. "the path of Allah": that is, jihad.

يُحمل هذا الحديث على وجهين: أ- أن قصير الزمانِ وصغير المكان وأقل النعيم من الجنة في الآخِرَة خيرٌ من طويل الزمان وكبير المكان وكثير المتاع في الدّنيا، تَزهيدًا فيها، وتصغيرًا لها، وترغيبًا في الجهاد في سبيل اللّهِ. ب- أن غدوة واحدة أو روحة في سبيل اللّهِ مع قصر وقتها وصغير مكانها ومحدود مشقتها قياسًا إلى مدة الدنيا وخلود الآخرة خير للعبد مما لو حصلت له الدنيا ودامت له بكل متاعها فأنفقها في طاعة اللّهِ. فضيلة الجهاد على غيره من الأعمال.
This hadith may be understood in two ways: (a) That a short span of time, a small space, and the least of the bliss of Paradise in the Hereafter is better than a long span of time, a vast space, and abundant enjoyment in this world—[a statement meant] to instill detachment from this world, to diminish its worth, and to encourage jihad in the path of Allah. (b) That a single morning or evening spent in the path of Allah—despite its brief duration, small space, and limited hardship—is, when measured against the span of this world and the eternity of the Hereafter, better for the servant than if he were to gain this world and have it endure for him with all its enjoyment and then spend it in obedience to Allah.
