Abu Said al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "Which of people is best?" He said: "A believer who strives with his self and his wealth in the path of Allah." He said, "Then who?" He said: "Then a believer in one of the mountain passes who worships Allah and spares people from his harm." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

A statement of the merit of jihad in the path of Allah with one's self and one's wealth. Withdrawing from people applies in times of tribulation (fitnah) and when a person fears for his religion, or to one who cannot bear the harm of others; otherwise, mixing with people, keeping their company, benefiting them, and treating them kindly is a great door to good deeds, righteousness, and increasing one's good works.
