عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «رِبَاطُ يَوْمٍ فِي سَبيلِ اللّهِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا عَلَيْهَا، وَمَوْضِعُ سَوْطِ أَحَدِكُمْ مِنَ الْجنَّةِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا عَلَيْهَا، وَالرَّوْحَةُ يَرُوحُهَا الْعَبْدُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ تَعالى أَوِ الْغَدْوَةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الدُّنْيا وَمَا عَليْهَا». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Sahl ibn Sad (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Standing guard (ribat) for a day in the path of Allah is better than the world and all that is upon it; a place in Paradise the size of one of your whips is better than the world and all that is upon it; and the evening or morning journey that a servant makes in the path of Allah the Exalted is better than the world and all that is upon it." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

الرباط: مراقبة العدو في الثغور "الأماكن التي تفصل بين المسلمين والكفار" المجاورة لبلادهم لحراسة من بها من المسلمين وملازمتها لدرء الأعداء موضع سوط: أي المكانَ الَّذي يُساوي الموضِعَ الَّذي توضع عليه العصا.
al-ribat (frontier guarding): watching the enemy at the frontier outposts—the places separating the Muslims from the disbelievers—adjacent to their lands, in order to guard the Muslims stationed there and to remain there to repel enemies. "the size of a whip": that is, a space equal to the spot on which a stick would be laid.

الحضّ على الرباط في سبيل اللّهِ والترغيب في الجهاد لإعلاء كلمة اللّه تعالى. التزهيد في الدنيا لفنائها والترغيب في الجهاد لعظيم ثوابه عند اللّهِ تعالى. إنّ الثواب الحاصل على مشية واحدة في الجهاد خير لصاحبها من الدنيا وما فيها لو جُمعت بحذافيرها.
Urging frontier guarding (ribat) in the path of Allah and encouraging jihad to raise high the word of Allah the Exalted. Instilling detachment from this world because of its perishing, and encouraging jihad because of its immense reward with Allah the Exalted. The reward gained for a single step taken in jihad is better for its doer than the world and all it contains, were it all gathered together in its entirety.
