عَنْ سَلْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «رِبَاطُ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ صِيَامِ شَهْرٍ وَقِيَامِهِ، وَإنْ مَاتَ فِيهِ جَرَى عَلَيْهِ عَمَلُهُ الَّذِي كَانَ يَعْمَلُ، وَأُجْرِيَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقُهُ، وَأَمِنَ الْفَتَّانَ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Standing guard (ribat) for a day and a night is better than fasting and praying in vigil for a month. If a person dies while doing so, the deed he used to perform continues [to be credited] to him, his provision continues to flow to him, and he is kept safe from the trials [of the grave]." أمن الفتّان: أي أمن من فتنة القبر وسؤال الملكين له.
"safe from the trials": that is, he is safe from the trial of the grave and the questioning of the two angels.

أنّ ثواب عمل المرابط لا ينقطع بالموت، وأنّ رزقه لا ينقطع أيضًا لأنّه سيرزقه من الجنّة كما يرزق الشهداء فهم أحياء عند ربهم يرزقون. أنّ المرابط في سبيل اللّهِ لا يُسأل في قبره، وقال البعض يحتمل أنّه لا يأتيه الملكان بما يسبب له الفزع والفتنة. أنّ نفع الرباط متعدٍّ، إذ فيه حفظ للمسلمين في دينهم وأعراضهم وأموالهم وبلدانهم، أمّا الصوم فــالمستفيد منه هو صاحبه دون غيره. فضيلة المجاهد المرابط بشكل خاص على غيره لما في رباطه حماية لأعراض المسلمين وممتلكاتهم.
The reward of the frontier guard's deed is not cut off by death, and his provision likewise does not cease, for he will be provided for from Paradise just as the martyrs are provided for—they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision. The one who stands guard in the path of Allah is not questioned in his grave; and some have said it may mean that the two angels will not come to him with what would cause him terror and trial. The benefit of frontier guarding extends to others, for in it lies protection of the Muslims in their religion, their honor, their wealth, and their lands; whereas fasting benefits only the one who performs it and no one else. The particular merit of the frontier-guarding warrior over others, because his guarding entails protection of the Muslims' honor and possessions.
