عَنْ عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «رِبَاطُ يَوْمٍ فِي سَبيلِ اللّهِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ يَوْمٍ فِيمَا سِوَاهُ مِنَ الْمَنَازِلِ» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Standing guard (ribat) for a day in the path of Allah is better than a thousand days spent elsewhere among the [other] stations." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.
الشرح · explanation
خير من ألف يوم: أي في الأجرِ والثَّوابِ والفضلِ. فيما سِواه: أي فيما سِوى الرِّباطِ في سَبيلِ اللّهِ والدِّفاعِ عَن دينِ اللّهِ من الأعمال والطاعات. مِن المَنازلِ: أي مَواضِعِ الخيراتِ وأماكن مضاعفة أجر الطَّاعاتِ.
"better than a thousand days": that is, in recompense, reward, and merit. "spent elsewhere": that is, in deeds and acts of obedience other than frontier guarding in the path of Allah and defending the religion of Allah. "among the stations": that is, the places of good deeds and the sites where the reward of acts of obedience is multiplied.

بيان زيادة أجر المرابط على غيره ويختلف ذلك بحسب اختلاف حال الناس نية وإخلاصًا. أنّ الإقامة في أرض الرباط للجهاد والمرابطة خير من الإقامة في غيرها من المنازل. أجمع العلماء على أنّ إقامة الرجل في أرض الرباط مرابطًا أفضل من إقامته في مكة والمدينة وقد ثبت أنّ أصحاب النّبيّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عليه وَسَلَّمَ ومن ورائهم التابعين تركوا مكة والمدينة وتوجهوا إلى أرض الرباط في الشام إلى أن ماتوا شهداء ومرابطين فيها.
A statement of the increased reward of the frontier guard over others, which varies according to the differing states of people in intention and sincerity. Residing in the land of frontier guarding for the sake of jihad and standing guard is better than residing in other places. The scholars are unanimous that a man's residing in the land of frontier guarding as a guard is better than his residing in Mecca or Medina; and it is established that the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and after them the Successors (Tabiun), left Mecca and Medina and set out for the land of frontier guarding in Syria (al-Sham), until they died there as martyrs and frontier guards.
