Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has taken it upon Himself [to reward] the one who goes out in His path — nothing driving him out but jihad in My path, faith in Me, and belief in My messengers — that He is guaranteed by Me either to be admitted into Paradise, or to be returned to the home from which he set out, with whatever reward or spoils he has attained. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, no one is wounded in the path of Allah but that he will come on the Day of Resurrection just as he was on the day he was wounded: its color the color of blood, but its scent the scent of musk. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, were it not that it would be too hard on the Muslims, I would never stay behind any expedition setting out to fight in the path of Allah. But I do not have the means to provide them mounts, nor do they have the means, and it grieves them to remain behind me. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I would love to fight in the path of Allah and be killed, then fight and be killed, then fight and be killed." Reported by Muslim, and al-Bukhari reported part of it.

Sincerity in jihad brings one of two goods to its doer: either Paradise, or a return home with the reward of the Hereafter and worldly spoils. Allah preserves the martyr in the state in which he was killed, so that he bears with him the witness to his virtue in sacrificing himself in obedience to his Lord, the scent of his blood wafting like musk. An emphatic declaration of the merit of jihad and fighting in the path of Allah the Exalted.
