عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: جَاءَ نَاسٌ إِلَى النَّبيِّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَنِ ابْعَثْ مَعَنَا رِجَالًا يُعَلِّمُونَا القُرْآنَ وَالسُّنَّةَ، فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِمْ سَبْعِينَ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ يُقَالُ لَهُمُ: الْقُرَّاءُ، فِيهِمْ خَالِي حَرَامٌ، يَقْرَؤُونَ الْقُرْآنَ، وَيَتَدَارَسُونَ بِاللَّيْلِ يَتَعَلَّمُونَ، وَكَانُوا بِالنَّهَارِ يَجِيئُونَ بِالْمَاءِ، فَيَضَعُونَهُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، وَيَحْتَطِبُونَ، فَيَبِيعُونَهُ وَيَشْتَرُونَ بِهِ الطَّعَامَ لِأَهْلِ الصُّفَّةِ وَلِلْفُقَرَاءِ، فَبَعَثَهُمُ النَّبيُّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَعَرَضُوا لَهُمْ فَقَتَلُوهُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَبْلُغُوا الْمَكَانَ، فَقَالُوا: اللَّهُمَّ، بَلِّغْ عَنَّا نَبِيَّنَا أَنَّا قَدْ لَقِينَاكَ فَرَضِينَا عَنْكَ وَرَضِيتَ عَنَّا، وَأتَى رَجُلٌ حَرَامًا خَالَ أَنَسٍ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ، فَطَعَنَهُ بِرُمْحٍ حَتَّى أَنْفَذَهُ، فَقَالَ حَرَامٌ: فُزْتُ وَرَبِّ الكَعْبَةِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّ إِخْوَانَكُمْ قَدْ قُتِلُوا، وَإنَّهُمْ قَالُوا: اللَّهُمَّ، بَلِّغْ عَنَّا نَبِيَّنَا أَنَّا قَدْ لَقِينَاكَ فَرَضِينَا عَنْكَ وَرَضِيتَ عَنَّا» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ، وَهَذَا لَفْظُ مُسْلِمٍ .
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Some people came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) [saying]: "Send with us men to teach us the Qur'an and the Sunnah." So he sent to them seventy men from the Ansar who were called the Reciters (al-qurra'), among them my maternal uncle Haram. They would recite the Qur'an and study together by night to learn, and by day they would bring water and place it in the mosque, gather firewood and sell it, and with its price buy food for the people of the Suffah and for the poor. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent them, and [the enemy] intercepted them and killed them before they reached their destination. They said: "O Allah, convey to our Prophet on our behalf that we have met You, and we are pleased with You and You are pleased with us." A man came to Haram, Anas's uncle, from behind and pierced him with a spear until it passed through him. Haram said: "I have succeeded, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your brothers have been killed, and they said: 'O Allah, convey to our Prophet on our behalf that we have met You, and we are pleased with You and You are pleased with us.'" Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim), and this is the wording of Muslim.

ناس: جماعة من أهل نجد عليهم أبو براء بن ملاعب الأسنة. الصفّة: مصطبة مظللة في مؤخرة المسجد يأوي إليها الفقراء. فعرضوا لهم: أي اعترضوا طريقهم، إذ عرض لهم عدو اللّهُ عامر بن الطفيل واستصرخ عليهم قبائل من عصية وسليم ورعل فقتلوهم. رضينا عنك: أي خضعنا لِما أمرتنا، ورضينا بما قدَّرتَ لنا، وسعدنا بما أكرمتنا وأفضت به علينا من فضلك ونعمتك ورحمتك. ورضيت عنا: بهدايتنا لطاعتك، وتوفيقنا لما يرضيك عنا، وقبولك عملنا وتحقيق ما وعدتنا.
"People": a group from the people of Najd, led by Abu Bara' ibn Mula'ib al-Asinna ("the wielder of spearheads"). "The Suffah": a shaded platform at the rear of the mosque where the poor took shelter. "intercepted them": that is, they blocked their path, for the enemy of Allah Amir ibn al-Tufayl confronted them and incited against them tribes from Usayya, Sulaym, and Ri'l, and they killed them. "we are pleased with You": that is, we submitted to what You commanded us, were content with what You decreed for us, and rejoiced in the honor and favor You bestowed upon us of Your grace, blessing, and mercy. "and You are pleased with us": by guiding us to Your obedience, granting us success in what pleases You of us, accepting our deeds, and fulfilling what You promised us.

من صدق في الجهاد في سبيل اللّهِ صدقه اللّه بالشهادة. بيان إقبال الصحابة على قراءة القرآن وطلب العلم واستجابتهم لرسول اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عليه وَسَلَّمَ فيما يأمرهم به ويرسلهم إليه مهما كلفهم ذلك من مخاطر. رضى الصحابة بما كتب عليهم من القضاء والقدر، وتكريم اللّه لهم بتسخير الوحي للإخبار عنهم. جواز وضع الطعام والشراب في المسجد إذا كان يأوي إليه الفقراء.
Whoever is truthful in jihad in the path of Allah, Allah confirms him with martyrdom. Showing the Companions' devotion to reciting the Qur'an and seeking knowledge, and their response to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in whatever he commanded them and sent them to, however great the dangers it cost them. The Companions' contentment with the decree and destiny written for them, and Allah's honoring of them by employing revelation to inform about them. The permissibility of placing food and drink in the mosque when the poor take shelter in it.
