عَنْ عَبْدِ اللّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي بَعْض أَيَّامِهِ الَّتِي لَقِيَ فِيهَا الْعَدُوَّ انْتَظَرَ حَتَّى مَالتِ الشَّمْسُ، ثُمَّ قَامَ فِي النَّاسِ فَقَالَ: «أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ لاَ تَتَمَنَّوْا لِقَاءَ العَدُوِّ، وَسَلُوا اللّهَ العَافِيَةَ، فَإذَا لقِيتُمُوهُمْ فَاصْبِرُوا، وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ الْجَنَّةَ تَحْتَ ظِلالِ السُّيُوفِ» ثُمَّ قَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ، مُنْزِلَ الْكِتَابِ، وَمُجْرِيَ السَّحَابِ، وَهَازِمَ الأحْزَابِ اهْزِمْهُمْ، وَانْصُرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), on one of the days on which he met the enemy, waited until the sun had declined, then stood among the people and said: "O people, do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for well-being. But when you meet them, be patient, and know that Paradise is beneath the shade of the swords." Then he said: "O Allah, Revealer of the Book, Mover of the clouds, Defeater of the confederates, defeat them and grant us victory over them." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

تقديم السلم والمهادنة وسؤال اللّه العافية والسلامة -خاصة إذا جنح إليه العدو- لما في الحرب والقتال من البلاء والفتنة والشدة والمشقة والضرر، فإذا لم يكن من لقائه بدّ فالصبر والثبات والإقدام وبارقة السيوف وإثخان العدو طريق الجنة. استحباب بدء القتال بعد زوال الشمس تفاؤلًا بانتقال الحال من الكرب إلى الفرج، وتجنبًا لحر الشمس وما يلحق بسببه من الأذى مع حر القتال. النهي عن تمني ملاقاة العدو لما فيه من العُجب والاعتماد على قوة النفس والرغبة في القتال والركون إلى القوة وذلك سبب الفشل. أهمية التحلي بالصبر، والتضرع إلى اللّهِ، والتوجه إليه بالدعاء طلبًا للنصر عند ملاقاة العدو، لما في ذلك من صدق التوكّل عليه والاستعانة به والإقرار بأنّ النصر من عنده سبحانه.
Giving precedence to peace, truce, and asking Allah for well-being and safety — especially when the enemy inclines to it — because of the affliction, trial, hardship, difficulty, and harm that war and fighting involve; but if there is no avoiding meeting the enemy, then patience, steadfastness, boldness, the flashing of swords, and inflicting heavy losses on the enemy are the path to Paradise. The recommendation of beginning fighting after the sun's decline, as a good omen for the change of state from distress to relief, and to avoid the sun's heat and the harm it brings along with the heat of battle. The prohibition of wishing to meet the enemy, because of the self-conceit, reliance on one's own strength, desire for fighting, and dependence on force that it involves — and that is a cause of failure. The importance of adorning oneself with patience, humbly beseeching Allah, and turning to Him in supplication seeking victory when meeting the enemy, for that reflects sincere reliance on Him, seeking His aid, and acknowledging that victory comes from Him, Glorified is He.
