عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «ثِنْتَانِ لا تُرَدَّانِ -أَوْ قَلَّمَا تُرَدَّانِ- الدُّعَاءُ عِنْدَ النِّدَاءِ، وَعِنْدَ الْبَأْسِ حِينَ يُلْحَمُ بَعْضُهُم بَعْضًا» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ بإِسْنَادٍ صَحِيحٍ.
Sahl ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two [supplications] are not rejected — or are rarely rejected: supplication at the time of the call (to prayer), and at the time of battle when they clash with one another." Reported by Abu Dawud with a sahih (authentic) chain.
الشرح · explanation
ثنتان: أي دعوتان. النداء: الأذان. البأس: اشتداد الحرب. يلحم بعضهم بعضًا: أي تَشتَبِك صُفوفُ المسلمين بصفوفِ العَدُوِّ وتَبْدأ المعركةُ.
"Two": that is, two supplications. "the call (al-nida')": the adhan. "al-ba's": the intensity of battle. "when they clash with one another": that is, the ranks of the Muslims become entangled with the ranks of the enemy and the battle begins.
