عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إذَا خَافَ قَوْمًا قَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَجْعَلُكَ فِي نُحُورِهِمْ، وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شُرُورِهِمْ» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ بإِسْنَادٍ صَحِيحٍ.
Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he feared a people, would say: "O Allah, we place You at their throats, and we seek refuge in You from their evils." Reported by Abu Dawud with a sahih (authentic) chain.
الشرح · explanation
نحورهم: النَّحْرُ هو موضِعُ الذَّبْحِ والقَتْلِ، والمعنى: أن يحول اللّه بيننا وبينهم فيَكفِيَنا شرهم ويدفع عنا أذاهم إذا أرادونا بسوءٍ. نعوذ: نعتصم.
"their throats (nuhurihim)": the nahr is the place of slaughter and killing; the meaning is that Allah come between us and them, sparing us their evil and repelling their harm from us if they intend us ill. "we seek refuge (na'udhu)": we take protection.

That fortifying oneself with the names of Allah the Exalted, taking shelter in Him, and seeking refuge with Him, Glorified is He, is a rescue and a protection for a person from what may befall him of what he dreads and fears.
