عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّىٰ اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «الْخَيْلُ مَعْقُودٌ فِي نَوَاصِيهَا الْخَيْرُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Horses have goodness tied to their forelocks until the Day of Resurrection." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
معقود: مربوط، والمقصود أنّه ملازم لها منوط بها. نواصيها: هي مقدمة الرأس أعلى الجبين، وتقال أيضًا للشعر المسترسل على الجبهة، وهي هنا كناية عن ذات الخيل.
"tied (ma'qud)": bound; the meaning is that goodness is inseparable from them and bound up with them. "their forelocks (nawasiha)": the forelock is the front of the head above the brow, and it also refers to the hair falling over the forehead; here it is a metonymy for the horses themselves.

استحباب اقتناء الخيل وإعدادها لغزو أعداء اللّهِ وقتالهم. الخير إنّما يكون فيها إذا ما استعملت في الجهاد، وقد كانت يومئذ من أعظم وسائل القتال ولم ينقطع حتى في إبان تقدم وسائل القتال. أنّ الجهاد قائم وباقٍ إلى قيام الساعة، وأنّ الخير والفضل حاصل ومستمر بقيامه.
The recommendation of keeping horses and preparing them for raiding and fighting the enemies of Allah. That the goodness is in them only when they are used in jihad; in those days they were among the greatest means of fighting, and this did not cease even with the advance of the means of warfare. That jihad remains and endures until the coming of the Hour, and that goodness and merit are attained and continue through its continuance.
