Riyad Al Salihin

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a military expedition, and he said: "Indeed, in Medina there are men who, whenever you traversed a journey or crossed a valley, were with you; illness held them back." In another narration: "an excuse held them back." In another narration: "except that they shared with you in the reward." Reported by al-Bukhari from the narration of Anas, and reported by Muslim from the narration of Jabir, and the wording is his.

That whoever is unable to go out for jihad, a sincere intention toward giving and sacrifice suffices for him to share with the fighters in the reward. The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) concern for the fighting Companions, and his knowledge and awareness of their excuses.
