عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ، الرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِلْمَغْنَمِ، وَالرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِيُذْكَرَ، وَالرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ ليُرَى مَكَانُهُ. وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: يُقَاتِلُ شَجَاعَةً، وَيُقَاتِلُ حَمِيَّةً. وَفِي رِوَايةٍ: وَيُقَاتِلُ غَضَبًا فَمَنْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ قَاتَلَ لِتَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللّهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, one man fights for spoils, another man fights to be mentioned, and another man fights so that his standing may be seen." In another narration: "one fights out of courage, and one fights out of zeal." In another narration: "and one fights out of anger—so who is in the path of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fights so that the word of Allah may be the highest, he is in the path of Allah." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

أعرابيًا: الأعراب هم سكان البادية من العرب. للمغنم: طلبًا للغنيمة. ليرى مكانه: أي مرتبته في الشجاعة. حمية: أنفة ومحاماة عن عشيرته. كلمة اللّهِ: أي كلمة التوحيد.
"a bedouin" (a'rabiyyan): the bedouins are the desert-dwelling Arabs. "for spoils" (lil-maghnam): seeking booty. "so that his standing may be seen": that is, his rank in courage. "zeal" (hamiyyah): pride and defense of his clan. "the word of Allah": that is, the word of tawhid (monotheism).

أنّ المقاتل المأجور هو من قاتل الكفّار الذين يصدون عن سبيل اللّهِ، وكان قتاله إيمانًا واحتسابًا لغرض ديني، لا المقاتل لغرض دنيوي. أنّ سبيل الله: تشمل صون العقيدة من التحريف، وإقامة دين اللّهِ وتحكيم شرعه، وحماية الأنفس والأعراض والأموال والأوطان والمقدسات. لا يتعارض مع صدق نوايا المجاهدين ما يجدونه من مغانم ومصالح في الجهاد شرط أن تكون نيتهم وغايتهم الأولى إعلاء كلمة اللّهِ وهذا هو الهدف الأسمى للجهاد.
That the fighter who is rewarded is the one who fights the disbelievers who bar from the path of Allah, and whose fighting is out of faith and seeking reward for a religious purpose—not the one who fights for a worldly purpose. That the path of Allah encompasses safeguarding the creed from distortion, establishing the religion of Allah and implementing His law, and protecting lives, honor, wealth, homelands, and sanctities. The spoils and benefits that the fighters find in jihad do not contradict the sincerity of their intentions, provided that their intention and foremost aim is the elevation of the word of Allah—and this is the loftiest goal of jihad.
