Riyad Al Salihin

Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no raiding party or detachment that goes out to fight, gains spoils, and comes back safely, but that they have already hastened two-thirds of their rewards; and there is no raiding party or detachment that fails and is afflicted, but that their rewards are made complete in full." Reported by Muslim.

That when the fighters come back safely and gain spoils, their reward is less than the reward of one who did not come back safely, or who came back safely but did not gain spoils. The smallness of the reward here does not mean any weakness in the merit of the deed; rather, safety and spoils for the fighter in the path of Allah are the mark of victory and might and the ultimate objective sought, and they carry their full reward. What is intended by the meaning is rather a warning to the one who came back safely and gained spoils against temptation, and a consolation for the one who fought and failed and was afflicted, by clarifying the increase of his reward through the disappointment and trial that befell him—so he attained reward upon reward—or was martyred and thereby attained the immense reward of martyrdom.
