Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man said: "O Messenger of Allah, permit me to wander [in the land]." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the wandering of my nation is jihad in the path of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic)." Reported by Abu Dawud with a good chain.

That the best kind of journeying through the land is striving in it for jihad in the path of Allah, because of the honoring of Islam that it entails. Perhaps the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not permit the man to wander because jihad had become individually obligatory upon him, or because he directed him to what was better for him. That it is not permissible for a person to prefer ease through wandering and travels for other than a legislated purpose and to abandon jihad in the path of Allah the Exalted while the homeland is in need of him—whether the jihad be with the self, with wealth, or with knowledge and calling to Allah the Exalted, for that too is jihad and an elevation of the word of Allah the Exalted.
