عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَعَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «الْحَرْبُ خَدْعَةٌ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Hurayrah and Jabir (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "War is deception." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

خدعة: احتيال على العدو للتمكن منه.
"deception" (khud'ah): a stratagem against the enemy in order to gain the upper hand over him.

The command to employ stratagem in defeating the enemy however possible, because the enemy that fights Islam and the Muslims has forfeited the protection of his blood and wealth, and restraining him from aggression is obligatory. Deception in war is permissible in whatever form, except through breaking faith and covenants. An alerting to taking precaution and caution, because the deception may come from the enemy.
