عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَا تَعُدُّونَ الشُّهَدَاءَ فِيكُمْ؟» قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ مَنْ قُتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ، قَالَ: «إِنَّ شُهَدَاءَ أُمَّتِي إِذًا لَقَلِيلٌ» قَالَوا: فَمَنْ هُمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ؟ قَالَ: «مَنْ قُتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ، وَمَنْ مَاتَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ، وَمَنْ مَاتَ فِي الطَّاعُونِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ، وَمَنْ مَاتَ فِي الْبَطْنِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ، والْغَرِيقُ شَهِيدٌ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whom do you count as martyrs among you?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, whoever is killed in the way of Allah is a martyr." He said: "Then indeed the martyrs of my nation would be few." They said: "Then who are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Whoever is killed in the way of Allah is a martyr, whoever dies in the way of Allah is a martyr, whoever dies of the plague is a martyr, whoever dies of an abdominal illness is a martyr, and the one who drowns is a martyr." من قتل في سبيل اللّهِ: هو من قضى مقتولًا بيد الكفار في ميدان المعركة مقبلًا مجاهدًا مخلصًا لإعلاء كلمة اللّهِ. وهذا هو الأصل شرعًا في الشهادة التي تجرى عليها أحكامها الشرعية في الدنيا وفي القبر وفي الآخرة.
"Whoever is killed in the way of Allah": he is the one who meets death slain at the hands of the disbelievers on the battlefield, advancing as a fighter, sincere in raising high the word of Allah. This is the foundational meaning of martyrdom in the Sharia, upon which its legal rulings apply in this world, in the grave, and in the Hereafter.

أنّ الشَّهادة أنواع كثيرة ودرجات متفاوتة. أنّ أشرف أنواع الشهادة لمن قُتل مجاهدًا للعدو في أرض المعركة، يليها موت من خرج في سبيل اللّهِ مجاهدًا أو حاجًّا ومنها: الموت بالطاعون أو الغرق أو مرض البطن، وغير ذلك مما نصت عليه الأحاديث الصحيحة. المُراد بِشهادة هؤلاء كلهم -غيرِ المقتولِ في سبيل اللّهِ- أنّهم يكون لهم في الآخرة ثواب الشهداء، وأمّا في الدنيا فلا تجري عليهم أحكام الشهيد فَيُغَسَّلون ويصلَّى عليهم.
Martyrdom is of many kinds and varying degrees. The noblest kind of martyrdom belongs to the one killed fighting the enemy on the battlefield; next is the death of one who went out in the way of Allah as a fighter or a pilgrim, and among them: death by the plague, drowning, or an abdominal illness, and other cases established by the authentic hadiths. What is meant by the martyrdom of all these—other than the one killed in the way of Allah—is that in the Hereafter they receive the reward of the martyrs; but in this world the rulings of the battlefield martyr do not apply to them, so they are washed and prayed over.
