عَنْ أَبِي صَفْوَانَ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: جَلبْتُ أَنَا وَمَخْرَمَةُ الْعبدِيُّ بَزًّا مِنْ هَجَرَ، فَجَاءَنَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَسَاوَمَنَا بِسَرَاوِيلَ، وَعِنْدِي وَزَّانٌ يَزِنُ بِالْأَجْرِ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِلْوَزَّانِ: «زِنْ وَأَرْجِحْ» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ، وَالتِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Abu Safwan Suwayd ibn Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Makhramah al-Abdi and I brought cloth from Hajar, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and bargained with us for some trousers. I had with me a weigher who weighed for a wage, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the weigher: "Weigh, and give extra." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

بزًا: ثيابًا. هجر: اسم بلد قريبة من البحرين. فساومنا: أي سألنا عن ثمنها من المساومة، والمساومة هي المجادلة بين البائع والمشتري على السلعة وفصل ثمنها. سراويل: يطلق على المفرد والجمع، وهو لفظ أعجمي معرب وهو مثل البنطال ونحوه. زن وأرجح: زن قدر الثمن المتفق عليه وزد شيئاً عليه.
"Bazz": garments, cloth. "Hajar": the name of a town near Bahrain. "He bargained with us": that is, he negotiated with us over its price, from musawama (bargaining), which is the back-and-forth negotiation between seller and buyer over the goods and the settling of its price. "Sarawil" (trousers): the word is used for both singular and plural; it is an arabized foreign word, similar to trousers and the like. "Weigh, and give extra": weigh out the amount of the agreed price and add something to it.

جواز المفاصلة شريطة ألّا يكون في ذلك ما يضجر البائع أو يبخس الحقّ. يستحب للمشتري أن يتسامح مع البائع ويزيد له شيئًا على الثمن المتراضى عليه، وكذلك يستحب للبائع أن يتنازل عن شيء من الثمن أو يزيد شيئًا في السلعة بعد الرضى بها. بيان ما كان عليه النّبيّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عليه وَسَلَّمَ من تسامح وحسن معاملة وكريم خلق.
The permissibility of haggling, provided it involves nothing that vexes the seller or diminishes what is rightfully due. It is recommended for the buyer to be lenient with the seller and add something to the mutually agreed price; likewise it is recommended for the seller to reduce something from the price or add something to the goods after the buyer has agreed to it. A depiction of the leniency, good dealing, and noble character of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
