عَنْ أنسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ خَرَجَ فِي طَلَبِ الْعِلْمِ فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever goes out in pursuit of knowledge is in the way of Allah until he returns." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.
الشرح · explanation
في سبيل اللّه: أي متلبس بطاعته ساعِِ لإعلاء كلمته. يرجع: أي لمكانه الذي خرج منه.
"In the way of Allah": that is, engaged in His obedience, striving to raise His word. "Returns": that is, to the place from which he set out.

أنّ طلب العلم جهاد في سبيل اللّه، فلطالب العلم أجر المجاهد في ميادين القتال، لأنّ كلًا منهما يقوم بما يحيي الدين ويحميه. من مات وهو يطلب العلم كان له مثل أجر الشهيد.
That seeking knowledge is jihad in the way of Allah, so the seeker of knowledge has the reward of the fighter on the battlefields, because each of them undertakes what gives life to the religion and protects it. Whoever dies while seeking knowledge has the like of the reward of the martyr.
