عَنْ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْنا: يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ، قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ، فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ: «قُولُوا: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إبْراهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Muhammad Ka'b ibn Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us and we said: "O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you with peace, but how are we to send blessings upon you?" He said: "Say: 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed the family of Ibrahim; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.'" Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

علِمنا كيف نسلّم عليك: وقد علمهم صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم أن يقولوا في التشهد: السلام عليك أيّها النّبيّ ورحمة اللّه وبركاته. صلِّ على محمد: أي ارحمه رحمةً مقرونةً بتعظيم لائق بمقامه الذي لا يعلمه إلّا أنت. آل محمد: هم ذوو القربى من بني هاشم وبني عبد المطلب من الذين آمنوا به، أو المراد كل من اتبع هديه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم من الأمة. كما صليت: كصلاتك. حميد مجيد: صيغتا مبالغة من الحمد والمجد، أي لأنّك أهل الثناء، والمجد والعظمة مستحقة لذاتك.
"We know how to greet you with peace": he (peace and blessings be upon him) had taught them to say in the tashahhud: "Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings." "Send blessings upon Muhammad": that is, have mercy upon him with a mercy joined to a magnification befitting his station, which none knows but You. "The family of Muhammad": they are the near kin from the Banu Hashim and Banu Abd al-Muttalib who believed in him; or what is meant is everyone of the Ummah who follows his guidance (peace and blessings be upon him). "As You sent blessings": like Your blessing. "Praiseworthy, Glorious": two intensive forms derived from praise (hamd) and glory (majd); that is, because You are worthy of all praise, and glory and greatness are deserved by Your very Essence.
