Abu Mas'ud al-Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were in the gathering of Sa'd ibn Ubadah, and Bashir ibn Sa'd said to him: "Allah the Exalted has commanded us to send blessings upon you, O Messenger of Allah; so how are we to send blessings upon you?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until we wished he had not asked him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim; and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed the family of Ibrahim; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.' And the greeting of peace is as you have already learned." Reported by Muslim.
"Bashir ibn Sa'd": he is the son of Sa'd ibn Tha'labah. "Until we wished [he had not asked]": that is, because of how long he prolonged his silence, out of compassion for the questioner; and his silence (peace and blessings be upon him) may have been because he was awaiting revelation or exercising independent reasoning. "As you have already learned": that is, in the tashahhud.
That the blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are joined with the blessings upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his family. The Muslim should ask the people of knowledge about what is unclear or hidden to him concerning the rulings of the religion, and not innovate on his own without knowledge or without asking the people of knowledge.
