عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «إِذَا تَشَهَّدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَليسْتَعِذْ بِاللّهِ مِنْ أَرْبَعٍ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ، وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَمِنْ فِتْنةِ المحْيَا والمَمَاتِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ المَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you has recited the tashahhud, let him seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (al-Masih al-Dajjal)." فتنة المحيا: أي من جميع البلايا والمحن الواقعة في الحياة مما يضر ببدن أو دين. الممات: أي من الابتلاء الذي يتعرض له الإنسان عند الاحتضار قبيل الممات. المسيح: الممسوح إحدى عينيه. المسيح الدجال: رجل كذّاب يظهر قرب يوم القيامة، يدّعي الألوهية ويفتن به كثير من الناس.
"The trial of life": that is, from all the afflictions and ordeals that befall one in life which harm body or religion. "Death (al-mamat)": that is, from the trial a person faces at the throes of death, just before dying. "Al-Masih (the Messiah, here the Dajjal)": the one wiped in one of his eyes. "Al-Masih al-Dajjal (the False Messiah)": a great liar who will appear near the Day of Resurrection, claiming divinity, by whom many people will be led astray.
