عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْها قَالَتْ: افْتَقدْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ، فَتَحَسَّسْتُ، فَإِذَا هُوَ رَاكِعٌ -أَوْ سَاجِدٌ- يَقُولُ: «سُبْحَانَكَ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، لا إِلَهَ إِلّا أنْتَ» وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: فَوقَعَتْ يَدِي عَلَى بَطْنِ قَدَمِهِ وَهُوَ فِي المَسْجِدِ، وَهُمَا منْصُوبَتَانِ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: «اللهُمَّ أَعُوذُ بِرضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ، وبمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ، لا أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ، أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I missed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one night, so I felt about for him, and there he was bowing—or prostrating—saying: "Glory be to You and praise be to You; there is no god but You." In another narration: My hand fell upon the soles of his feet while he was in the place of prayer, and they were upright, and he was saying: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Your good pleasure from Your wrath, and in Your pardon from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot enumerate praise of You; You are as You have praised Yourself." Reported by Muslim.

افتقدت النبي: أي فقدته ولم أعثر عليه. فتحسست: طلبته وبحثت عنه. في المسجد: في السجود. سخطك: غضبك وانتقامك. بمعافاتك: بعفوك. أعوذ بك منك: ألتجئ برحمتك من عذابك فلا يجير من عذابك إلا أنت، إذ لا يملك أحد معك شيئًا. لا أحصي: لا أطيق أن أحصر أو أعد أوصافك الحسنة الجميلة وأفضالك الكثيرة. ثناء عليك: ذكرًا بالجميل.
"I missed the Prophet": that is, I lost him and could not find him. "So I felt about (fatahassastu)": I sought and searched for him. "In the place of prayer": in the state of prostration. "Your wrath (sakhatika)": Your anger and retribution. "Your pardon (mu'afatika)": Your forgiveness. "I seek refuge in You from You": I take shelter in Your mercy from Your punishment, for none can grant protection from Your punishment except You, since no one possesses anything alongside You. "I cannot enumerate (la uhsi)": I am unable to encompass or count Your beautiful attributes and Your abundant favors. "Praise of You (thana'an alayk)": mention of You with what is beautiful.

مهما بالغ الإنسان في تقديس اللّه تعالى والثناء عليه، فإنّه لا يبلغ مدى عظمة اللّه تعالى، وما أثنى هو به على نفسه سبحانه وتعالى في كثير من آيات كتابه العزيز. النّبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلم لم يحص ثناءه على ربه بالرغم من أنّه أعلم الناس بربه وفي ذلك كامل العبودية والتواضع للّه عزّ وجلّ.
However much a person strives to sanctify and praise Allah the Exalted, he cannot attain the extent of Allah's greatness, nor the praise with which He, Glorified and Exalted is He, has praised Himself in many verses of His Mighty Book. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) could not enumerate his praise of his Lord, despite being the most knowledgeable of people about his Lord; in this lies complete servitude and humility before Allah (the Mighty and Majestic).
