عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ وَأَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَا: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِراشِهِ قَالَ: «بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيَا وَأَمُوتُ» وَإِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ قَالَ: «الْحَمْدُ للّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِليْهِ النُّشُورُ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Hudhayfah and Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to his bed, he would say: "In Your name, O Allah, I live and I die." And when he awoke, he would say: "Praise be to Allah who gave us life after having caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection." Reported by al-Bukhari.
الشرح · explanation
أحيانا: أيقظنا. أماتنا: الموتة الصغرى وهي النوم. النشور: الحياة بعد الموت.
"Gave us life": awakened us. "Caused us to die": the minor death, which is sleep. "The resurrection": life after death.

استحباب هذا الذكر عند النوم وعند الاستيقاظ، ليظل هذا الذكر حاملًا المرء على التيقظ، للإقبال على مولاه يقظة ونومًا، ويستقبل ليله ونهاره بذكر اللّه تعالى، فلا يكون غافلًا عن ربه
The desirability of this remembrance upon going to sleep and upon waking, so that it keeps a person mindful, turning to his Master in waking and in sleep, receiving his night and his day with the remembrance of Allah the Exalted, so that he is not heedless of his Lord.
