عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِذَا أَتَيْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ فَتَوضَّأْ وُضُوءَكَ لِلصَّلاةِ، ثُمَّ اضْطَجِعْ عَلَى شِقِّكَ الأَيْمَنِ، وَقُلِ: اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمرِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ، رَهْبَةً وَرَغْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، لا مَلْجَأَ وَلا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلّا إِليْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ، وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلتَ، فَإِنْ مِتَّ مِتَّ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ، وَاجْعَلْهُنَّ آخِرَ مَا تَقُولُ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Al-Bara' ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "When you come to your bed, perform ablution as you would for prayer, then lie down on your right side and say: 'O Allah, I submit my soul to You, I entrust my affair to You, and I turn my back to You, in hope and fear of You. There is no refuge or escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.' If you die, you will die upon the fitrah (natural disposition of faith). And make them the last thing you say." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

أسلمت نفسي إليك: جعلتها منقادة لحكمك. وجهت وجهي إليك: الوجه كناية عن الذات، أي جعلت ذاتي ونفسي متجهة إليك وحدك. ألجأت ظهري إليك: اعتمدت عليك في أموري كلها. رهبة ورغبة إليك: أي خوفًا من عقابك وطمعًا في ثوابك. الفطرة: دين التوحيد الخالي من أي شرك.
"I submit my soul to You": I make it submissive to Your decree. "I turn my face to You": the face is a metaphor for the self, that is, I make my whole self and being turn to You alone. "I turn my back to You": I rely on You in all my affairs. "In hope and fear of You": that is, out of fear of Your punishment and desire for Your reward. "The fitrah": the religion of pure monotheism, free of any associating partners with Allah.
