عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ قَالَ: «الْحَمْدُ للّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا، وَكَفَانَا وَآوَانَا، فَكَمْ مِمَّنْ لا كَافِيَ لَهُ ولا مُؤْوِيَ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he went to his bed, would say: "All praise is due to Allah, who has fed us and given us drink, sufficed us and given us shelter; for how many are there who have none to suffice them and none to give them shelter!" Reported by Muslim.

كفانا: من الكفاية. آوانا: جعل لنا مسكنًا نأوي إليه. لا كافي ولا مؤوي: أي لا راحم ولا عاطف عليه، وقيل: لا وطن له ولا سكن يأوي إليه. الكافي والمؤوي: هو الله سبحانه، فهو يكفي الناس رزقهم وييسر لهم المأوى.
"Sufficed us" (kafana): from sufficiency (kifayah). "Given us shelter" (awana): He provided us a dwelling to which we may retreat. "None to suffice them and none to give them shelter": that is, none to show them mercy or compassion; and it is said: no homeland or dwelling to which they may retreat. The One who suffices and shelters is Allah, Glorified is He; He provides people their sustenance and makes shelter easy for them.

The recommendation of supplicating before sleep. In it the servant enumerates the blessings Allah has bestowed upon him and looks to those whom Allah has placed below him in worldly circumstances, so that he may value what he has and increase in gratitude to Allah.
