عَنِ النُّعْمانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُما، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «الدُّعَاءُ هُوَ الْعِبَادَةُ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ، وَالتِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Supplication is worship." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

الدعاء هو العبادة: وذلك للدلالة على الإقبال على اللّه تعالى والإعراض عما سواه.
"Supplication is worship": this indicates turning toward Allah the Exalted and turning away from all besides Him.

مفهوم العبادة في الإسلام شامل لكل طاعة وتضرع وانقياد للّه تعالى. ولكن ليس معنى ذلك أنّ الدعاء يغني عن العبادات المفروضة من صلاة وصوم وزكاة وحج، وإنّما أفاد الحديث أنّ الدعاء داخل في شمول العبادة، وإظهار للعبودية للّه تعالى.
The concept of worship in Islam encompasses every act of obedience, humble entreaty, and submission to Allah the Exalted. But this does not mean that supplication dispenses with the obligatory acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, zakat, and Hajj; rather, the hadith conveys that supplication falls within the scope of worship and is a manifestation of servitude to Allah the Exalted.
