عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ: «اللُّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى، وَالتُّقَى، وَالْعَفَافَ، وَالْغِنَى» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency." Reported by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
التقى: ملازمة التقوى، وهي فعل ما أمر اللّه به، واجتناب ما نهى اللّه عنه. العفاف: الكفّ عن الفواحش والمعاصي وكل ما حرّم اللّه. الغنى: أي الاستغناء عن الحاجة إلى الناس.
"Piety" (al-tuqa): adhering to God-consciousness, which is doing what Allah has commanded and avoiding what Allah has forbidden. "Chastity" (al-'afaf): refraining from indecencies, sins, and all that Allah has forbidden. "Self-sufficiency" (al-ghina): being independent of any need for people.
