Riyad Al Salihin

Shakal ibn Humayd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I said, O Messenger of Allah, teach me a supplication. He said: "Say: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, from the evil of my sight, from the evil of my tongue, from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

"The evil of my hearing": that is, that I should hear false speech, slander, backbiting, and all that Allah has forbidden to hear, or that I should fail to hear the truth. "The evil of my sight": that is, by looking at people's nakedness, or at what Allah has forbidden. "The evil of my heart": that is, by occupying it with other than the remembrance of Allah the Exalted, or by holding a corrupt belief in which there is rancor, envy, or love of sins and their people. "The evil of my semen": al-maniyy is what comes forth from a man as fluid with desire and pleasure; and it is said that what is meant here is the private part, whose evil lies in placing it in other than its lawful place.

Urging the safeguarding of the hearing, sight, tongue, heart, and private part by using them in what pleases Allah the Exalted, and supplicating for the protection of these members. Drawing attention to man's responsibility for his senses, as Allah, Glorified and Exalted, has informed: "Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart — about all those one will be questioned." [Surah al-Israʾ: 36] The servant should guard his senses from evil and occupy them with the doing of good, for they are the nourishment of the heart.
