عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: دَعَا رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم بِدُعَاءٍ كَثِيرٍ، لَمْ نَحْفَظْ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ دَعَوْتَ بِدُعَاءٍ كَثِيرٍ لَمْ نَحْفَظْ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، فَقَالَ: «أَلا أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَى مَا يَجْمَعُ ذَلِكَ كُلَّهُ؟ تَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِ مَا سَأَلَكَ مِنْهُ نَبِيُّكَ مُحَمَّدٌ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ، وأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا اسْتَعَاذَ مِنْهُ نَبِيُّكَ مُحمَّدٌ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ، وَأَنْتَ المُسْتَعَانُ، وَعَلَيْكَ الْبَلاغُ؛ وَلا حَوْلَ وَلا قُوَّةَ إِلّا بِاللّهِ» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made a lengthy supplication, of which we memorized nothing. We said: O Messenger of Allah, you made a long supplication of which we memorized nothing. He said: "Shall I not direct you to what encompasses all of that? Say: O Allah, I ask You for the best of what Your Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked You for, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what Your Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) sought refuge from. You are the One whose help is sought, and upon You is the attainment; and there is no might nor power except with Allah." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

المستعان: المطلوب منه الإعانة. عليك البلاغ: أي الكفاية أو ما يبلغ الكفاية من خير الدنيا.
"The One whose help is sought": the One from whom aid is asked. "Upon You is the attainment": that is, the sufficiency, or that which attains sufficiency of the good of this world.
