Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out ten men as a scouting party and appointed over them Asim ibn Thabit al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). They set out until, when they were at al-Hadah between Usfan and Mecca, they were mentioned to a clan of Hudhayl called Banu Lahyan, who set out after them with nearly a hundred archers. They followed their tracks, and when Asim and his companions became aware of them, they took refuge in a place, and the people surrounded them and said: "Come down and surrender, and you have the covenant and pledge that we will not kill any of you." Asim ibn Thabit said: "O people, as for me, I will not come down under the protection of a disbeliever. O Allah, inform Your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about us." So they shot them with arrows and killed Asim. Three men came down to them on the covenant and pledge, among them Khubayb, Zayd ibn al-Dathinah, and another man. When they had them in their power, they loosened the strings of their bows and bound them with them. The third man said: "This is the first treachery. By Allah, I will not accompany you; I have in these an example" — meaning the slain. So they dragged him and tried to force him, but he refused to accompany them, and they killed him. They went off with Khubayb and Zayd ibn al-Dathinah until they sold them in Mecca after the battle of Badr. The sons of al-Harith ibn Amir ibn Nawfal ibn Abd Manaf bought Khubayb — for Khubayb was the one who had killed al-Harith on the day of Badr. Khubayb remained a captive with them until they resolved to kill him. He borrowed a razor from one of the daughters of al-Harith to shave his pubic hair, and she lent it to him. A little boy of hers crept up while she was heedless, until he reached him, and she found him seating the boy on his thigh with the razor in his hand. She was gripped by such alarm that Khubayb recognized it, and he said: "Do you fear that I will kill him? I would never do that." She said: "By Allah, I never saw a captive better than Khubayb. By Allah, I once found him eating from a cluster of grapes in his hand while he was bound in irons, and there was no fruit in Mecca [at the time]." And she used to say: "It was a provision that Allah granted to Khubayb." When they took him out of the Haram to kill him in the profane land, Khubayb said to them: "Let me pray two rak'ahs." So they left him, and he prayed two rak'ahs, then said: "By Allah, were it not that you would think that what afflicts me is fear [of death], I would have prayed longer. O Allah, count them one by one, kill them scattered, and leave not one of them." And he said in verse: "I do not care, when I am slain as a Muslim, on which side, for Allah's sake, my death may be; that is for the sake of Allah, and if He wills, He will bless the severed limbs of a dismembered body." Khubayb was the one who established for every Muslim killed in captivity the practice of praying two rak'ahs. And he (i.e., the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) informed his companions on the day they were struck of their news. Some people of Quraysh, when they were told that Asim had been killed, sent to bring something of his by which he could be recognized — for he had killed one of their great men. But Allah sent over Asim something like a cloud of bees, which protected him from their messengers, and they were unable to cut anything from him. Reported by al-Bukhari. In this chapter there are many authentic hadiths that have already passed in their places in this book, among them: the hadith of the boy who used to visit the monk and the sorcerer; the hadith of Jurayj; the hadith of the companions of the cave upon whom the boulder closed; the hadith of the man who heard a voice in the cloud saying, "Water the garden of so-and-so"; and others. The proofs on this subject are many and well-known, and with Allah is the granting of success.

The merit of this party of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and a demonstration of their courage and patience. The karamah of Khubayb and Asim, showing the extent of their patience under the harm of the polytheists, and Allah the Exalted's protection of them after their deaths. The believer must not be soft with his enemies, and must hold fast to his principles and morals under captivity and torture at the hands of his enemies. The recommendation of praying two rak'ahs at [the point of] martyrdom, since Khubayb did so and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved of it.
