Abu Abd al-Rahman Bilal ibn al-Harith al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed a man utters a word pleasing to Allah the Exalted, not thinking that it would reach what it reached, yet Allah records for him His pleasure by it until the Day he meets Him; and indeed a man utters a word displeasing to Allah, not thinking that it would reach what it reached, yet Allah records for him His displeasure by it until the Day he meets Him." Reported by Malik in al-Muwatta, and by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

The subject matter of speech is what determines the effect that results from it; a Muslim may leave his Islam because of a word, and Allah may grant victory to Islam through a word.
