عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللّهِ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ حَدِّثْنِي بِأَمْرٍ أَعْتَصِمُ بِهِ، قَالَ: «قُلْ: رَبِّيَ اللهُ، ثُمَّ اسْتَقِمْ» قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ مَا أَخْوَفُ مَا تَخَافُ عَلَيَّ؟ فَأَخَذَ بِلِسَانِ نَفْسِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: «هَذَا». رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Sufyan ibn Abdillah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a matter to which I may hold fast. He said: "Say: My Lord is Allah, then be steadfast." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the thing you fear most for me? He took hold of his own tongue and then said: "This." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.
الشرح · explanation
أعتصم: أتمسك به وأنجو. ثمّ استقم: أي داوم على فعل الأوامر واجتناب النواهي.
"Hold fast": I cling to it and am saved. "Then be steadfast": that is, persevere in doing what is commanded and avoiding what is forbidden.

الأمر بتحقيق وجود الإيمان أولًا ثم إتباعه بالأعمال الصالحة، لتدل عليه وترسخه. أنّ الإيمان هو الأساس لجميع الأعمال الصالحة. عظم شأن اللسان والتحذير من شروره، لأنّه سريع الانزلاق والتردي في الهلاك.
The command to first realize the presence of faith, then to follow it with righteous deeds, so that they may indicate it and firmly establish it. That faith is the foundation of all righteous deeds. The gravity of the tongue and the warning against its evils, for it is quick to slip and to fall into destruction.
